Help Guide Your Park’s Future!

Greetings Haven Hill and Highland State Recreation Area Supporter,

A few years ago, we met to discuss ideas for the Gatehouse and developed some great ideas for our upcoming Visitor Center. And now we’re meeting again to discuss future ideas for the Sheep Barn and the Carriage House, and you’re invited!

Meeting Info

Date: Wednesday, November 16

Time: 6:30 pm

Location: Haven Hill Gatehouse

Address: Highland State Recreation Area, 5200 Highland Road, White Lake, 48383

This isn’t about details, it’s about BIG IDEAS. It’s about making the park the best place it can be now and far into the future.

Sheep Barn

This is the largest building in the park and could be getting even bigger in the next few years. Past ideas have included setting up a snack bar/concession stand, an ice-skating rink, hosting large scale event rentals, making the space available for non-profit park group activities, and hosting in-park events, like Friday night movies shown on the back of the Barn. Come discuss these ideas and introduce your own.

Carriage House

Located atop Haven Hill, the Carriage House has been a garage, a guest house for friends of the Ford family, a conference center, and storage space. For the future, we’ve discussed making it into the Haven Hill Museum, classroom space, and an artist in residence space. We’ll be discussing these ideas, but please bring your own, too. The more ideas, the better.

If you haven’t been involved in a brainstorming session before, don’t be intimidated by the idea. They’re relaxed gatherings where ideas are welcomed and discussed. There are no votes, no decisions, and no commitments made. Sometimes the wildest ideas spur conversations that produce far better concepts than anyone had come up with before. We may reach consensus, but we’ll certainly have a positive discussion about the future.

John Fitzgerald

The Friends of Highland Recreation Area (FOHRA) volunteer organization was established in 2007, and is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt non-profit organization operating under lease agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Within one of the most picturesque, fascinating, and historically significant state parks in southeast lower Michigan, our goal is to combine the former Haven Hill estate history with Highland Recreation Area’s existing amenities, wilderness, and recreation.
