Young Birders - Woodcock Watching, April 25 at Highland State Rec Area: 7 - 9 pm

The Oakland County Audubon Society will host a Young Birders walk at Highland State Recreation Area as American Woodcocks return to Michigan in spring. This unusual shorebird performs a unique aerial display known as the “sky dance”. And of course, adults are also welcome and encouraged to come see this amazing bird!

Highland Recreation Area is ideal habitat for the woodcock and many other birds. Take an evening hike to see this outstanding natural area and watch the “sky dance” at sunset. Dress for the weather and plan to hike 2 miles. And bring a lawn chair and binoculars. Meet at the Goose Meadow Parking lot. State parks passport is required for park entry.

General Information: 1) Young Birders must complete a form found on the Oakland County Young Birders web page and bring to an event to participate. 2) We recommend that young birders have their own binoculars (light weight) and a field notebook. There is the possibility of sharing or borrowing binoculars on outings but this cannot be guaranteed. 3) Transportation to event locations is the responsibility of the parent unless otherwise indicated. 4) Be sure to dress for the weather. 5) All Young Birder Club activities will be canceled during severe weather conditions (snowstorms, tornado/thunderstorms). Please check with activity leaders when in doubt

The Friends of Highland Recreation Area (FOHRA) volunteer organization was established in 2007, and is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt non-profit organization operating under lease agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Within one of the most picturesque, fascinating, and historically significant state parks in southeast lower Michigan, our goal is to combine the former Haven Hill estate history with Highland Recreation Area’s existing amenities, wilderness, and recreation.
