Haven Hill Visitor Center - Planning Meeting

The Friends of Highland Recreation Area are transforming the original Haven Hill Gatehouse into a new visitor center for the park, and we need your help.

On Wednesday, December 12, at 7:00 pm we’ll be holding an informal public idea session at the Gatehouse. We’ll start off with a quick tour, discuss the list of ideas already submitted, then open the floor to all other ideas.

The Gatehouse, located across from the park office at the main entrance on M-59, was originally built by Edsel and Eleanor Ford as part of their Haven Hill estate. Guests of Haven Hill would stop at the Gatehouse as the first part of any visit to what would later become Highland State Recreation Area. We’re working on returning the Gatehouse to this role, making it the first stop for park visitors to learn more about all the great natural, historic, and recreational resources available in the park.

Here’s where we need your help. We want to make this visitor center the best it can be, which means we need your ideas.

Please join us at the Haven Hill Gatehouse and help make our new visitor center the best it can be.

FOHRA presentation to the Michigan Botanical Club SE Michigan Chapter at the Heritage Park Visitor Center in Farmington Hills... 2:00 pm.

Genevieve Gillette and the Treasures of Nature
by Lawrence Falardeau of the Friends of Highland Recreation Area, Artist and Landscape Architect

Michigan state parks welcomed the newly-mobile drivers of automobiles in the early 1900s. Genevieve Gillette made it her life’s work to preserve precious natural settings and make them available to the travelling public. In 1920 she began her landscape architecture career working in Chicago with noted landscape designer Jens Jensen, whose naturalistic designs included the Edsel Ford estate at Haven Hill. Over decades, her career supported her enduring volunteer efforts in raising awareness of Michigan’s natural wonders and their value to society. She established important conservation groups, gained funding for Michigan State Parks, even advised President Lyndon Johnson on recreation and nature.

Join us at the Visitor’s Center, Heritage Park, 24915 Farmington Rd, Farmington Hills, MI 48336 (off Farmington Road between 10 and 11 Mile Roads).  There is plenty of free parking just outside the Visitor’s Center. Refreshments will be served after the program. There are many trails and a nature center at the park, so come early or stay after the program and enjoy the area.

Haven Hill at the HVCA: Memories in Time

Memories in Time: The People and Place of Haven Hill/Watercolors, Oil, Pencil Sketches, Photographs is both an art exhibit and a slice of history.

Edsel and Eleanor Ford started to collect farmland for a family farm estate which straddled Highland and White Lake townships in 1923, and the family resided there until Edsel died in 1943. It was his favorite place, “his nerve retreat,” and he enjoyed life there with wife and children, Henry II, Benson, Josephine and William Clay.

The exhibit, open through June 27 during regular gallery hours, includes 26 framed works, including nine paintings and supporting pencil sketches by painter Lawrence Falardeau and 10 to 12 photographs by photographer Jay Fitzgerald; they’re paying tribute to those who lived here, starting with the Native Americans through the Ford family years to those who share, visit and support this site.

It’s featured in a gallery opening from 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 3, which offers an opportunity to meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments,
